  • Exploring the Past, Present and Future of Micro Aggressions and Implicit Bias
    All day
    03/15/2017

Microaggressions are brief comments or behaviors that communicate bias and insult toward certain populations. Microaggressions are rooted in our unconscious (implicit) biases. Implicit biases are rooted in the historical oppression in the United States that has perpetuated stereotypes about different groups of people. Discussions, simulations, and other activities will be used to help participants understand the history of microaggressions and unconscious biases, with emphasis placed on how to overcome our biases.

  • Family-Centered Care & Cultural Humility
    All day
    03/29/2017

The core of family-centered care is the belief in mutually beneficial partnerships between families and professionals. Through this workshop, we will explore how the culture of our professional disciplines may clash with the principles of family-centered care; participants will explore the implications of this on their interactions with families. Through discussions, simulations, and through hearing about the experiences of real families who have received care for their children, participants will be presented with a renewed perspective on their ability to demonstrate the principles of family-centered care.
