What You Need to Know about Preeclampsia!

Preeclampsia is one of the most common complications of pregnancy. It impacts both the mother and the baby and is the leading cause of death worldwide for women during pregnancy (or up to 6 weeks postpartum), fetuses, and newborns. Preeclampsia is characterized by high blood pressure after 20 weeks gestation, protein in the urine, and signs of organ damage.

Know Your Risk Factors

  • Having a history of chronic high blood pressure or a prior pregnancy with high blood pressure
  • Having kidney disease, autoimmune disease, or diabetes
  • Family history of preeclampsia
  • African American women are 4x more likely to die from preeclampsia
  • Being under 20 or over 35 years old
  • Expecting multiples
  • Being obese
  • Becoming pregnant via IVF
  • First time pregnancy
