ABOUT THE INITIATIVE

Georgia Strong Families

The Georgia Strong Families Program is a Healthy Start Initiative focused on improving health outcomes before, during, and after pregnancy and encourage healthy birth outcomes for families here in Muscogee County. Georgia Strong Families provides moms, newborns and families with the resources, support and the help that they need to have a healthy pregnancy and a healthy birth. Georgia Strong Families offers home-visitation services and prenatal group sessions using the Parents as Teachers and Partners for a Healthy Baby Curriculum. We serve pregnant women, families & caregivers of children age birth up to 18 months in Muscogee County.

Georgia Strong Families services include:

• Care coordination, home visitation, group sessions, and outreach to help assure access to healthcare and other community resources.
• Support to families in reducing identified risk factors.
• Prenatal and Postnatal Screening and Intervention pathways.
• Preconception and Interconception Care.
• Fatherhood services.
• Additional Services may include childbirth education, parenting education, nutrition counseling, smoking cessation, psychosocial counseling, breastfeeding education, and other risk appropriate care.

This program is completely voluntary. There is no cost for this program and there are no income requirements.

Having an active, involved father can greatly affect a child’s cognitive and social development. The Georgia Strong Families (GSF) Fatherhood Initiative truly believes that men do not have to be a “Super Dad” to be a Great Dad!

LENA Start

The purpose of LENA Start is to promote the wellness of young children ages birth to 3 years old by addressing the physical, social, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral aspects of their development.

Stephanie V. Blank Center for Safe and Healthy Children at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Bio:

Dr. Greenbaum is a child abuse physician at the Stephanie V. Blank Center for Safe and Healthy Children at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (a service of Children’s at Scottish Rite). She is also the medical director of the Global Child Health and Wellbeing Initiative for the International Centre for Missing and Exploited Children. She served on the board of the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children, as secretary and as president. She co-chairs the Human Trafficking committee for the Helfer Society, and the Education/Training committee for HEAL Trafficking, an organization of medical professionals working on human trafficking issues.

Wednesday August 23, 2017: Effects of caregiver drug abuse on the fetus and young child.

Caregiver Drug Use: In this presentation, participants will learn the adverse effects of prenatal exposure to a variety of substances including alcohol, cocaine and methamphetamines. The will discuss the ongoing risks to health and well-being for children living with substance-using caregivers. This webinar is for parents and for professionals working with children. CEU's will be provided for nurses and social workers. Certificates of attendance will be provided.

Wednesday July 19, 2017: Recognition and reporting of child sexual and physical abuse.

Recognition and Reporting: This presentation will focus on how to recognize risk factors or signs that physical and sexual abuse, neglect, and sexual exploitation may be occurring. You will also learn about the basics of the mandatory reporting laws relating to child abuse in Georgia, including the most recent changes to the Mandated Reporting statute. We will also briefly discuss the DFCS reporting process.This webinar is for parents and for professionals working with children. CEU's will be provided for nurses and social workers. Trauma Informed System of Care: In this presentation we’ll discuss the trauma-informed approach to working with children who may have been traumatized by abuse, neglect, family dysfunction, grief and loss or other major event. We’ll talk about ways in which professionals, and their organizations, can take steps to minimize re-trauma to children and families, foster resilience and build on individual and family strengths. This webinar is for parents and for professionals working with children. CEU's will be provided for nurses and social workers. Certificates of attendance will be provided.
